Essential Oils – Emotions Archives

Releasing emotional patterns with eoBelieve it or not, our emotions have a big impact on physical health and wellbeing. The famous neuroscientist, Candice Pert once said “”repressed traumas caused by overwhelming emotion can be stored in a body part, thereafter affecting our ability to feel that part or even move it”.

What essentially happens is that the moment we have a terrible experience, our brain (the limbic centre specifically) chooses a place to store that memory for future reference until it can be dealt with. Not unlike a librarian filing a book in a collection for future use really, though in this instance it’s one heavy duty library we are talking about. Because many of the traumas we carry, go back to our childhood, infancy and even in the womb. And unless we identify these traumas or emotional patterns, they manifest through out our lives as lingering problems that impact on our capacity to experience our lives to their fullest potential.

So how do we identify these emotional patterns and then deal with them? This is where Dr Carolyn Mein’s book Releasing emotional patterns with essential oils comes in. Why essential oils? Essential oils have the capacity to interact directly with stored emotional patterns in the human body, through the sense of smell (the olfactory sense carries information directly to the limbic centre in the brain – where many emotions are stored) and through the human energy field (remember, essential oils have a frequency – see my article What’s your frequency? for more on this topic).

Carolyn Mein outlines 5 steps to releasing emotional patterns:

1. Identifying the pattern that is linked to the emotion
2. Understanding the pattern – the opposite side of the emotion
3. learning the lesson by discovering the way out of the situation
4. clearing and reprogramming the pattern in the body’s cellular memory – changing the DNA
5. releasing the pattern from the memory held in the limbic system of the brain.

Essential oils play a key role in the last 5 steps. Using essential oils directly on acupuncture alarm points sends the oil’s frequency directly to the organ or tissue affected – clearing the pattern from the cellular memory – while smelling the oil releases the memory held in the limbic centre of the brain.

Carolyn’s book has some amazing tables in it. One table links parts of the body with specific emotions and the essential oil that will help. There are tables that work from the other angles as well, e.g. what emotions  and acupuncture alarm points are associated with a specific essential oil. The book also contains extensive body and facial charts showing the various acupuncture alarm points.

To use a well worn phrase, “but wait there’s more”. Also covered in the book:

Do you work in an environment that’s stressful, where you’re frequently dealing with upset or stressed out customers? Maybe like a bank or insurance company. Or perhaps you work in a clinic, where your clients are waiting anxiously, e.g. a dentist. And what about the staff or employees who work with you or for you? Would you be interested in improving their mood and performance? If you answered “Yes” to any of these questions then you’ll be happy to know that essential oils can help you out here.

A number of scientific studies carried out over the years have shown that the aromas of essential oils can and do affect our mood and performance (see the papers listed at the end of this article). While one of these studies used an oil burner, we strongly recommend an oil diffuser for the best effect. 

How can aromas or smelling essential oils affect our mood you may ask? The sense of olfactory (smell) is hardwired into the brain. When you inhale a fragrance, the odor molecules attach themselves to receptor cells sites inside the nasal membrane. When stimulated by odor molecules, these nerve cells triggers electrical impulses to the olfactory bulb in the brain. The olfactory bulb then transmits these impulses to the gustatory centre (where the sensation of taste is perceived), the amygdala (where emotional memories are stored), and other parts of the limbic centre in the brain. The limbic centre is connected to the parts of the brain that control heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels, and hormonal levels. This is one way in which essential oils can have physiological and psychological effects. [1]

So what oils are best?

If you are trying to improve work performance (your own and others), try diffusing Peppermint and Lemon oils in your office. If you find yourself flagging or getting a little sleepy in mid-afternoon (especially after a big lunch) try inhaling a little peppermint or putting a couple of drops in a glass of water ( TipInhaling a little peppermint can even come in handy when you’re driving and finding yourself getting sleepy behind the wheel ).  Lemon has been found to help reduce depression and stress when inhaled. [2]  Think of the possibilities here, if you work in a clinic or counselling practice; not to mention the busy customer service counter of a bank or insurance office.

Another oil that has been tested in a clinical environment is Lavender. In a study reported in the International Journal of Nursing Practice, 85% of respondents to a questionnaire said that there had been a positive improvement in the work environment following the use of Lavender oil burners (imagine if they had used diffusers). [3]. The Essential Oils Desk Reference also lists the following oils as beneficial in dealing with anger and agitation: Bergamot, Cedarwood, Frankincense, Rose, Sandalwood and Ylang Ylang*.

 Some might ask is it ethical to change the mood of your customers or co-workers? Isn’t it like brain-washing? My answer to this is that I’ve been in many situations where I wished I had kept a cool head. Sometimes our emotions get in the way of rational discussions. Sure, there are times we need to be assertive, but not a lot is achieved by blowing our stack either. Essential oils can play a role in improving our workplaces. Many of you may know someone, perhaps close to you, who is afflicted by anxiety, worry and panic attacks. Perhaps that person may even be you, or was in the past. Someone I know with this issue, inspired me to look into the matter; hence this article (I shall continue with the subject of essential oils for skin care at a later date – Anthony).

The Oxford dictionary defines someone who is anxious as being “troubled and uneasy in mind”. I am no psychologist, but I see anxiety as an acute form of stress; so bad you can’t sleep at night, you feel depressed and can’t seem to feel a sense of joy in life. I don’t know about you, but emotional pain can be as debilitating if not more so than pain of the physical variety.

And sure if you go to your doctor he or she will prescribe the usual cocktail of drugs to somehow allow you to continue with your life. But often these come with their own bevy of side effects. If you want to avoid the synthetics, the pharmaceuticals, then essential oils are a great alternative. They have the capacity to enter the blood stream very quickly, repair DNA, penetrate the blood-brain barrier and in so doing bring much needed oxygen into the brain. Dis-ease – “a deficiency of love”

This one comes from Gary Young, but I thought I would share it with you:

“I feel very strongly that the biggest problem we face today is a lack of love. I learned several years ago from patients I saw in my practice that the cause of what we call “dis-ease” is nothing more than a deficiency of self love. When we have self love, we take care of our body–our temple–because we expect it to serve us. When we have self love, we feed it the way it should be fed. When we have self love, we nurture and care for our bodies. We don’t damage and destroy them.

When there is no love, that is when war rages–between countries, between people, and within a person’s head. Several years ago I did a seminar in which I preformed blood research. I had my microscopes there and performed the tests on site. A lady came to me after we had concluded the seminar. She said, “Gary, have you ever looked at the blood of someone who is having a real emotional trauma, then given them oils and tested their blood later on?” I said, “No, I haven’t.” She then asked me if I would mind doing that for a client of hers, and I did so.

Of course, her client’s blood was very aggregated—it contained a great deal of bacteria from undigested food particles. When people are under stress they don’t digest their food very well, so that is a pretty natural thing to see. The woman was clearly upset because her husband had left her, she was in the middle of a divorce, and her home was under foreclosure. It was a traumatic time for her.

We applied some oils on her and she calmed down and stopped crying. After about 20 to 30 minutes, we took another blood specimen. That is when I realized that we were dealing with something that was very, very real. Her tests the second time were very different from the first results, much more normal.

That’s one of the many reasons I am so proud of the things we do at Young Living, our products, and the care we take with them. I have heard countless testimonials about the wonderful effects our oils have on people’s lives. Real effects, life-changing effects. I have seen miracles, and I have experienced miracles. I know how important these oils are and how much good they do. The oils can make a tremendous difference, but they have to be used…. and shared.

None of us has to settle for second best in this life–unless we choose to settle. No matter how big obstacles seem, they can be handled or improved. The oils can help you move beyond the things that are blocking you–both physically and emotionally.

If you have a battle going on inside you, stop fighting it. Focus your energy on positives instead of negatives. Place your trust in a better future and in the ability you have to change whatever needs to be changed so you can move into that future. Use the oils; they will help you. And share them with others who also need them. Be a positive force that lifts other up rather than dragging yourself down. Start loving yourself, and things will get better.”
