Essential oil ideas for Valentine’s Day

With Valentine’s Day approaching I thought I might share some ideas I’ve come across, for scents that could help make for a great occasion. I’ve stopped using after-shaves for some time and now only use essential oils. With so many great essential oils and oil blends who needs Calvin Klein, Lagerfeld, Chanel or Estee Lauder; especially when you consider that a lot of these big names use synthetics that aren’t that great for you.

Ylang ylang (Cananga odorata)

One essential oil that I’ve been using lately as an after-shave alternative is Ylang ylang. It smells great and both guys and gals can use it. It has so many great qualities from both a physical and emotional level.
It’s uplifting, relaxing, promotes confidence and is said to balance male and female energies.  It has a reputation as an aphrodisiac and in Indonesia, the marriage bed is sprinkled with ylang ylang flowers on the wedding night. On a physical level it has properties that can assist with high blood pressure. I usually apply a few drops on either the wrists, neck or even chest area around the heart. However you could also diffuse it in your living area or bedroom, or alternatively incorporate it into a massage, by adding it to a carrier oil (Almond oil, jojoba, etc). Ylang ylang’s other properties are: antidepressant, antiseptic, antispasmodic, vasodilating and sedative
Blend Classification: Personifier and Modifier
Blends with: Anise, bergamot, cardamom, chamomile, cumin, geranium, grapefruit, lemon, marjoram, sandalwood and vetiver.
Odor: Type: Middle to Base Notes (20-80% of the blend); Scent: Sweet, heavy, cloying, tropical floral with spicy balsamic undertones.
Safety data: Use sparingly if you suffer low blood pressure.

Shutran™

Shutran is an essential oil blend that was especially created by Gary to be used like a cologne (although without the synthetics in it). And although it was designed for men to boost feelings of masculinity and confidence, its aroma is appealing to both men and women. It includes the exclusive-to-Young-Living Idaho Blue Spruce (Picea pungens), a refreshing, invigorating essential oil to both body and mind. Also in the blend is ocotea (Ocotea quixos), hinoki  (Chamaecyparis obtusa), davana (Artemisia pallens), cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica), coriander (Coriandrum sativum), lemon (Citrus limon), lavender (Lavendula angustifolia) and ylang ylang (Cananga odorata). If applying on your skin avoid direct sunlight for up to 12 hours after.

Blends you can make up

The following are a couple of great ideas that were posted on the Young Living blog

Tyler’s “Blue Collar Meets White Collar” after-shave.

Has a masculine yet gentle aroma, that you can apply after shaving or before bed to moisturize the skin overnight. For this blend use the following:

  • 6 drops of Royal Hawaiian Sandalwood (Santalum paniculatum)
  • 4 drops of Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha)
  • 3 drops of Mister™, Hong Kuai or Hinoki10 drops of V-6™ vegetable oil
  • 10 drops of witch hazel extract

Make sure you use darkened glass bottle to store your blend

Tyler’s “Perfume for Her” for a light, sweet and long-lasting perfume. For this blend use: 

  • 15 Drops of a citrus essential oil like Bergamot
  • 3 drops of either ylang ylang, lavender, clary sage or geranium
  • 2 drops of a secondary floral oils from those listed above.

If the aroma is too strong add a few drops of V-6™ vegetable oil . If you prefer it stronger, add an extra drop of oil (or as needed) of the two floral oils.

Essential oils that support your brain

So much of our daily lives and quality of life relies on the health of our mental faculties. And yet we are plagued on one end by mental fatigue, poor concentration and burn-out and on the other with long-term degenerative diseases such as Alzheimers and Dementia. Good news is that we can do something about it. Scientific research suggests there are a number of essential oils that can benefit our cognitive abilities and help us to maintain healthy brains. One lecturer in early childhood and special education studies, Professor Barbara Wilmes, has even gone as far as to suggest that educators should be using essential oils to boost learning in our classrooms. [1]

Thyme essential oil (Thymus vulgaris)

One of the primary structural components of the brain is a fat known as DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid). DHA belongs to the Omega 3 group of fatty acids and is largely derived from fish oils. So yes, keep using the fish oil. Of the Omega 3 fatty acids, DHA and EPA are the most important to our brain and overall health. Did you know that Thyme essential oil has been shown in research to dramatically slow down the degeneration of DHA in the brain?

In a study carried out in 2000, laboratory rats were fed a daily dose of thyme oil (42.5 mg/K of body weight over the course of their lifetime (around 28 months). When the data was analyzed it was found that DHA levels in the 28 month old rat brains was the same as that of 7 month old rats. Putting this in human terms, it would be the equivalent of an 80 year old having the brain chemistry of a 20 year old. [2]

At the Young Living convention in Brisbane, last year (Oct 13-15th 2011), I attended the lectures of Dr Peter Minke.
Dr Peter Minke, a survivor of cancer, is a prominent advocate of healthy lifestyles and an avid user of therapeutic grade essential oils. Married with four children, Dr Minke explained why essential oils should form an integral part of every family’s first aid.
For Peter Minke, therapeutic grade essential oils fulfill all the requirements for a first aid tool. These are that they should be:
  • safe
  • easily available
  • easy to carry
  • easy to apply
  • easy to regulate the amount used
  • durable with long shelf life
  • fast acting
He outlined 6 key principles in the use of therapeutic grade essential oils as first aid tools for the family.
Principle 1: Expect therapeutic results from therapeutic grade essential oils. 
Dr Minke says don’t waste your time (and risk your health) with recreational fragrances. Only therapeutic grade essential oils will give you therapeutic effects. There are thousands of peer reviewed studies and journal articles documenting the effects of therapeutic grade essential oils. There are some things to consider regarding the safe use of essential oils:
  • Essential oils and water don’t mix. If you find that an oil is too hot on the skin, don’t use water. If it burns put vegetable oil on it first. This will draw up the essential oil. Then you can use soap and water.
  • Babies and menthol don’t mix. Don’t use peppermint or wintergreen with children under 3. One in 10,000 are sensitive to menthol. It can anesthetise the respiratory system.
  • Some oils are photo-sensitive (mostly citrus), so don’t put them on skin that will be exposed to the sun.
  • In first aid speed matters. With bumps and burns each passing moment allows for more swelling, inflammation and tissue damage. Likewise with bleeding, stings and bites, panic and extreme stress – work quickly.
Principle 2: Use what you have.
Some examples:
When Dr Minke’s 4 year old child had a fall and bumped his forehead – he used the blend Valor*
Another example was where he got 15 ant bites on his foot and it swelled up – he put the blend Purification* on it quickly.
Or if he got overheated out in the sun – Peppermint oil on his ear.
His wife became anxious during labor – she inhaled Lavender oil and it brought her blood pressure down.
A nose bleed on his son – he put Cypress oil on his arm.
If you see the kids are starting to get sick, start giving them Thieves* oil blend or Immupower* blend.
For babies some oils are harsh. Oils such as LemonMyrtle and Frankincense are gentle. Dilute them with V6 if there is any sensitivity.
Principle 3: Be a super sleuth
  • Watch for signs of change – better or worse
  • Expect immediate results.
  • Change the programme if it’s not working.
  • And bring the oils with you when you’re waiting in or on your way to the emergency room.
Early intervention is best.
Principle 4: Body Weight Equivalent
Use less on a baby. 1 drop on a 10 lb baby is like 20 drops on a 200 lb adult (2.2 lb to the kilogram).
Dr Minke’s favourite oils for infants include: Valor*LemonMyrtleLavender and Frankincense.
Diaper bag essentials: Valor*CypressPurification* and Thieves
Home essentials: FrankincenseLavenderLemonPeppermintMyrtleImmupower* and Deep Relief* roll-on.
Principle 5: Frequency, Intensity and Duration
How much oil to use? Enough oil often enough for long enough to make a difference. Watch for signs of improvement or change.
Dr Minke uses about 1-3 drops of oil for a small child (0-5 years of age)
Principle 6: Be prepared.
Last but not least, you can’t use oils if you don’t have any oils.

Essential oils of Ecuador – RutaVaLa

Welcome back. Last time round we had a look at Palo Santo. This week we look at a blend – RutaVaLa. – made up of Ruta, Valerian and Lavender. I’m sure you all know people around you who are stressed, anxious, depressed or find it difficult to sleep at night. This oil blend will interest you.

The oil Ruta (Ruta Graveolens) has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal qualities, which explains why they use Ruta as a flavouring agent in cheese – it prevents mold.

It also contains Alpha Pinene and Eucalyptol. Alpha Pinene is anti-tumoral, while Eucalyptol is beneficial to people with chronic respiratory stress. It’s also beneficial to people who suffer from Maladaptive Stress Syndrome. This disorder results in what Gary Young refers to as stress allergies. When the body is under stress, allergies manifest (usually food allergies) because the digestive system is compromised and proteins can’t be digested. RutaVaLa helps to alleviate stress allergies. RutaVaLa will lower cortisol and anxiety levels.

Gary Young added Lavender and Valerian. Lavender contains aldehydes and esters which are calming and sedative. Valerian has been investigated for its tranquilising properties. Its key components – Valerenic acid and Valerone – have a calming effect on the central nervous system. The Lavender and Valerian also give the blend a pleasant fragrance, as Ruta on its own has a very strong and not too pleasant odour. So the Lavender and Valerian balance it out.

Essential oils for pregnancy – stretchmarks

After our short article on essential oils for pregnancy several weeks ago,  a number of questions were raised by some readers and so this article is a follow up.  Are stretch marks from pregnancy a concern for you? Or perhaps you’re concerned that you may have to undergo an episiotomy after delivery? Well essential oils can and have helped women with these problems. Today I’m going to talk about  about two remarkable essential oil based products known as ClaraDerm and TenderTush.

ClaraDerm is made up of the essential oils of Myrrh, Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree), Lavender, Frankincense, Roman Chamomile and Helichrysum in a base of fractionated coconut oil. Gary Young developed this blend for his wife, Mary, who was expecting at the time. She sprayed it around her vaginal area after each elimination, for up to two months before she had her baby.

Mary also rubbed on TenderTush (also created by Gary for her) on her tummy. Tender Tush ointment consists of Virgin coconut oil, cocoa butter, pure bees wax, Wheat germ oil, Organic olive oil,  Almond oil and the essential oils: Sandalwood, Rosewood, Roman Chamomile, Lavender, Cistus, Blue Tansy, Lemon, and Frankincense.

The end result was that Mary had no stretch marks and no need for an episiotomy.

ClaraDerm is also fantastic for skin irritations, rashes and yeast infections such as Candida.

Essential oils for pregnancy

Essential oils can be valuable to women going through pregnancy. Stretch marks, skin elasticity, tearing of skin during childbirth, stress and anxiety – these are things that essential oils can help with.

To improve skin elasticity and reduce stretch marks –

Lavender and Myrrh can assist here. Also the oil Geranium and the oil blend Gentle Baby. Gentle Baby is a Young Living blend containing Rosewood, Lemon, Lavender, Jasmine, Roman Chamomile, Bergamot, Ylang Ylang, Palmarosa, Rose and Geranium. Essential oil blends are very potent. Somehow mixing these oils together creates something greater than the sum of its parts.

To use: Dilute 1 part essential oil with 1 part vegetable oil (can be almond oil, grape seed oil, olive oil or fractionated coconut oil) Massage over the abdomen during the entire pregnancy to prevent scarring and on the perineum (tissue between vagina and rectum) to help it stretch during childbirth. It can also be massaged over the back, neck and feet area or diffused into the environment to relieve anxiety and engender serenity (Avoid applying on bare skin, if you intend going outdoors because a number of the oils are sensitive to the sun).

For relief of anxiety –

A number of oils diffused, inhaled or massaged can relieve stress and anxiety. Gentle Baby I’ve already mentioned. Others include Joy and Valor.   Joy is a YL oil blend containing Rose, Bergamot, Mandarin, Ylang Ylang, Lemon, Geranium, Jasmine, Palmarosa, Roman Chamomile and Rosewood. Again, avoid applying to bare skin, if you are going to be exposed to sunlight. Valor contains Rosewood, Blue Tansy, Frankincense and Spruce. Many of these oils were used by the ancient Romans to instil courage and self-confidence before battle; not that you’re going to go off to war or anything like that, although I suspect some of my fellow women may certainly associate childbirth with battle. 🙂  Valor will help reduce some of the stress before and after childbirth.

Essential Oils to avoid during pregnancy –

A number of essential oils mimic the hormones in our bodies and as such can disrupt normal pregnancy development. These should be avoided, while you’re pregnant. These include : Basil, Calamus, Clary Sage, Fennel, Hyssop, Nutmeg, Rosemary, Sage, Tansy, and Tarragon.

On a similar note, we only ever recommend the use of pure, unadulterated and therapeutic grade essential oils (See our article from March this year). Anything less and you risk doing yourself and your baby serious harm. Do you work in an environment that’s stressful, where you’re frequently dealing with upset or stressed out customers? Maybe like a bank or insurance company. Or perhaps you work in a clinic, where your clients are waiting anxiously, e.g. a dentist. And what about the staff or employees who work with you or for you? Would you be interested in improving their mood and performance? If you answered “Yes” to any of these questions then you’ll be happy to know that essential oils can help you out here.

A number of scientific studies carried out over the years have shown that the aromas of essential oils can and do affect our mood and performance (see the papers listed at the end of this article). While one of these studies used an oil burner, we strongly recommend an oil diffuser for the best effect. 

How can aromas or smelling essential oils affect our mood you may ask? The sense of olfactory (smell) is hardwired into the brain. When you inhale a fragrance, the odor molecules attach themselves to receptor cells sites inside the nasal membrane. When stimulated by odor molecules, these nerve cells triggers electrical impulses to the olfactory bulb in the brain. The olfactory bulb then transmits these impulses to the gustatory centre (where the sensation of taste is perceived), the amygdala (where emotional memories are stored), and other parts of the limbic centre in the brain. The limbic centre is connected to the parts of the brain that control heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels, and hormonal levels. This is one way in which essential oils can have physiological and psychological effects. [1]

So what oils are best?

If you are trying to improve work performance (your own and others), try diffusing Peppermint and Lemon oils in your office. If you find yourself flagging or getting a little sleepy in mid-afternoon (especially after a big lunch) try inhaling a little peppermint or putting a couple of drops in a glass of water ( TipInhaling a little peppermint can even come in handy when you’re driving and finding yourself getting sleepy behind the wheel ).  Lemon has been found to help reduce depression and stress when inhaled. [2]  Think of the possibilities here, if you work in a clinic or counselling practice; not to mention the busy customer service counter of a bank or insurance office.

Another oil that has been tested in a clinical environment is Lavender. In a study reported in the International Journal of Nursing Practice, 85% of respondents to a questionnaire said that there had been a positive improvement in the work environment following the use of Lavender oil burners (imagine if they had used diffusers). [3]. The Essential Oils Desk Reference also lists the following oils as beneficial in dealing with anger and agitation: Bergamot, Cedarwood, Frankincense, Rose, Sandalwood and Ylang Ylang*.

 Some might ask is it ethical to change the mood of your customers or co-workers? Isn’t it like brain-washing? My answer to this is that I’ve been in many situations where I wished I had kept a cool head. Sometimes our emotions get in the way of rational discussions. Sure, there are times we need to be assertive, but not a lot is achieved by blowing our stack either. Essential oils can play a role in improving our workplaces. Essential Oils for the Skin – Part Three

We continue from our last post, looking at essential oil products made for the skin. You will notice from some of the testimonials, that a number of these products serve multiple functions, e.g. people have reported wolfberry eye creme actually helping their vision, or the Sandalwood moisture cream helping someone to sleep. Folks, these skin products aren’t just skin products, like the ones you might buy at the supermarket. They contain pure, therapeutic grade, unadulterated essential oils. So these skin products don’t just help you look good, they have the potential to make you feel good and improve your health.

6. KidScents Lotion

This was actually designed to moisturise and protect children’s very sensitive skin, but as you’ll see, adults are putting it to good use as well. It includes MSM, shea butter, aloe vera, almond and wheatgerm oils, extracts of calendula, chamomile, orange blossom and algae. The essential oils used are Cedarwood, Western Red Cedar leaf, Rosewood and Geranium.

7.  Orange Blossom Facial Wash

8.  Sandalwood Moisture Cream

It’s recommended you use after cleansing and toning your skin. It contains Goats cream, which has been used for centuries to revitalise dehydrated skin. Also included are MSM, Wolfberry Seed Oil, Shea butter, tocopherol (vitamin e), and extracts of gingko biloba, grape seed, chamomile and orange blossom. The essential oils included are Sandalwood, Myrrh, Rosewood, Rosemary Verbenon and Lavender.

9.  Tender Tush

Tender Tush was developed with babies in mind, as it helps to protect and nourish skin in the nappy area. However as you’ll see in some of the testimonials, a lot of women are using it for themselves. Its soothing ingredients of coconut, olive and wheatgerm oils make it suitable for alleviating skin redness and irritation, as well as stretch marks and keeping skin supple.  It also includes cocoa butter, beeswax, almond oil and the essential oils of Sandalwood, Rosewood, Roman Chamomile, Lavender, cistus ladanifer, blue tansy and Frankincense.

It’s formulated from the extracts of Ningxia Wolfberry seeds.  It’s rich in vitamin E and linolenic and linoleic acids and is highly regarded in China for its skin regenerative properties. [1] The cream includes MSM, Aloe Vera gel, Goat’s cream, Avocado oil, Shea butter, Kukui nut oil, Almond and Jojoba oils, Rosehip seed oil, Witch hazel extract and the essential oils of Lavender, Rosewood, Roman Chamomile, Frankincense and Geranium.
