Stress relief blends: Peace and Calming, RutaVaLa, Stress Away, Tranquil and White Angelica
This week, I’ll be putting out a post on Wellbeing, looking at the best essential oils for stress relief; so I thought I would use this post to look at some of the top oil blends for stress relief. An oil blend is going to be more potent than the sum of its parts (oils). Somehow the combined effect is greater than if you had applied the individual oils on their own. Imagine, then if we combine essential oils known for their stress relieving properties. Gary Young, of Young Living, has over the years created some amazing blends.

As well as a brief description, I’ve included the experiences of people who have used these oils successfully. Just recently I read  that Young Living had partnered with Donna Karan’s Urban Zen Integrative Therapy programme (UZIT)  , by donating essential oils to soldiers suffering with post-traumatic stress disorder. In June this year, The UZIT programme launched Operation Warrior Wellness, with the co-operation of the U.S. military, to research how soldiers would react to integrative therapy which includes meditation, yoga, Reiki and the use of Young Living Essential Oils. The programme’s goal is to study how natural therapies can provide soldiers with the tools to reduce stress, anxiety and increase relaxation. The article in question didn’t reveal what oils Young Living had given towards the project, but I can imagine that when the results of the study are in we’ll get more information.
In the meantime, I thought this might be a good opportunity to discuss what essential oils might be beneficial to sufferers of PTSD. PTSD is commonly thought of as a returned soldier’s affliction. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case. Not that I wish this on anyone, but there is a good chance that at some point in our lives we will encounter someone close to us (or maybe even ourselves), that is suffering this disorder. PTSD affects not just those exposed to a war zone, but also people involved in natural disasters or violent crimes – both rescue workers and victims – adults and children. Before we look at ways to help people, let’s look at what exactly PTSD is and what some of the symptoms are.
PTSD and its symptoms
PTSD is essentially an anxiety disorder that some people get after seeing or living through a dangerous event.  Normally humans experience the “fight or flight” response when there is some danger or the risk of harm. This is a healthy response. But in people who suffer PTSD, this reaction doesn’t function properly. They remain in a state of fear or anxiety even when the danger has long passed.
So what are the symptoms that someone is suffering PTSD?
- They may re-experience symptoms such as flashbacks or bad dreams
- Avoidance. This includes: staying away from places or objects that remind them of the bad experience, emotional numbness and even difficulty in remembering the bad experience.
- Hyperarousal symptoms including: being easily startled, feeling tense or edgy, having angry outbursts or difficulty sleeping.

Welcome back. Last time round we had a look at Palo Santo. This week we look at a blend – RutaVaLa. – made up of Ruta, Valerian and Lavender. I’m sure you all know people around you who are stressed, anxious, depressed or find it difficult to sleep at night. This oil blend will interest you.
The oil Ruta (Ruta Graveolens) has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal qualities, which explains why they use Ruta as a flavouring agent in cheese – it prevents mold.
It also contains Alpha Pinene and Eucalyptol. Alpha Pinene is anti-tumoral, while Eucalyptol is beneficial to people with chronic respiratory stress. It’s also beneficial to people who suffer from Maladaptive Stress Syndrome. This disorder results in what Gary Young refers to as stress allergies. When the body is under stress, allergies manifest (usually food allergies) because the digestive system is compromised and proteins can’t be digested. RutaVaLa helps to alleviate stress allergies. RutaVaLa will lower cortisol and anxiety levels.
Gary Young added Lavender and Valerian. Lavender contains aldehydes and esters which are calming and sedative. Valerian has been investigated for its tranquilising properties. Its key components – Valerenic acid and Valerone – have a calming effect on the central nervous system. The Lavender and Valerian also give the blend a pleasant fragrance, as Ruta on its own has a very strong and not too pleasant odour. So the Lavender and Valerian balance it out.

Many of you may know someone, perhaps close to you, who is afflicted by anxiety, worry and panic attacks. Perhaps that person may even be you, or was in the past. Someone I know with this issue, inspired me to look into the matter; hence this article (I shall continue with the subject of essential oils for skin care at a later date – Anthony).
The Oxford dictionary defines someone who is anxious as being “troubled and uneasy in mind”. I am no psychologist, but I see anxiety as an acute form of stress; so bad you can’t sleep at night, you feel depressed and can’t seem to feel a sense of joy in life. I don’t know about you, but emotional pain can be as debilitating if not more so than pain of the physical variety.
And sure if you go to your doctor he or she will prescribe the usual cocktail of drugs to somehow allow you to continue with your life. But often these come with their own bevy of side effects. If you want to avoid the synthetics, the pharmaceuticals, then essential oils are a great alternative. They have the capacity to enter the blood stream very quickly, repair DNA, penetrate the blood-brain barrier and in so doing bring much needed oxygen into the brain. The hows and whys of why essential oils can benefit us emotionally, I’ll leave for another time. So what are the oils that will help someone suffering from anxiety, worry and panic attacks?
