The topic of inflammation has come up a number of times on this site, and we’ve looked at a number of supplements and oils that address it, as well as specific ailments. Because of my concern with the number of people increasingly using corticosteroids such as cortisone, I decided to write a post on Wellbeing addressing the use essential oils for inflammation. There you’ll find a list of the top 12.

In this post, I thought I would  mention that there are a number of supplements, which utilize essential oils, that can be beneficial in dealing with inflammation. Both Sulfurzyme and BLM are supplements that contain the essential oil Copaiba, a very potent anti-inflammatory oil, as well as MSM, a supplement that research has shown to be very beneficial in dealing with pain and inflammation. Essential Oils of Ecuador – Copaiba

Copaiba (pronounced Co-pa-ee-ba) or Copaifera Reticulata, and also known as Copal. is not strictly an oil obtained from Ecuador. It is found in Asia, Central and South America (Yes, so maybe I should call this series Essential oils of South America 😀 ).[1] The most potent variety, was found by Young Living, to be in the wilds of Brazil.

The copaifera of Brazil was chosen because in gas chromatograph tests it was chosen to have the highest amount of Beta Caryophyllene. Beta Caryophyllene is known as a sesquiterpene. And what does that all mean in layman’s language? It means Copaiba has anti-inflammatory and anti-septic properties. It means it’s capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier and increasing oxygen to the brain’s cells, and in particular to the pineal and pituitary glands.

So what can Copaiba do for us?

As I’ve already mentioned, Copaiba has anti-inflammatory properties. In fact its anti-inflammatory properties are twice as strong as Wintergreen essential oil – an oil that many massage therapists will be acquainted with – and yet it’s so gentle on the skin.[2]

Sulfurzyme for Arthritis, Allergies, and Pain

Do you know someone who suffers the debilitating pain of osteoarthritis? What about asthma, allergies, rheumatism, tendonitis, fibromyalgia, poor nail and hair growth, eczema, dermatitis, acne, gout, bursitis, scleroderma, lupus, constipation, impaired mental faculties, low libido? These are all possible signs of sulfur deficiency. And if so, Sulfurzyme, with a key ingredient – MSM – is going to be of interest to you. I mentioned Sulfurzyme in our previous article on nutritional balance. I’ve also mentioned MSM in previous articles on essential oils for skin and hair. We’ll come back to these shortly.

So What is MSM?

MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane) is a sulfur bearing compound found widely in nature (fresh fruit, vegetables, milk,fish and grains), and it’s an excellent source of nutritional sulfur which according to researchers Ronald Lawrence, Ph.D., M.D., and Stanley Jacob, M.D., has helped hundreds of patients.

In their book, The Miracle of MSM: The Natural solution for pain (1999), Lawrence and Jacob have compiled research showing that MSM is a safe, natural solution for back pain, tendonitis, chronic headaches, fibromyalgia, rheumatism, arthritis, athletic injuries, muscle spasms, asthma, and allergies. One example of a patient they helped treat with MSM was a 70- year-old woman who was suffering from severe arthritis. Using MSM this woman was actually able to postpone the need for a double knee replacement. After only two months on MSM, she was walking again with much less pain and stiffness. And MSM users haven’t experienced side effects such as fluid retention and immune suppression, that they might have with something like cortisone.

Stanley Jacobs goes as far as to say that there may be no better or safer non-surgical back pain therapy than MSM. [1] Jacob said: “I have seen several hundred patients for back pain secondary to osteoarthritis, disc degeneration, spinal misalignments, or accidents. For such painrelated conditions, MSM is usually beneficial.” Another chiropractor, Richard Shaefer of Wheeling, Illinois backed this up, saying: “I have been recommending MSM for more than six months. The results have been excellent. I consistently see major reduction in pain and inflammation in arthritic joints, along with improved range of motion. I can’t think of a single individual who isn’t getting some kind of positive effect.” [2]

Dr Cole Woolley – 3 Steps to nutritional balance

Last week, I was fortunate enough to go and hear a talk by Dr Cole Woolley, the director of research at Young Living Essential oils. Dr Woolley was both a motivating and fascinating presenter. He spoke at length of his experiences with the harvesting and distillation of Sacred frankincense in Oman. He also spoke about some of the steps we can take towards nutritional balance in our lives, and so today I’m going to share with you the information he gave us.

There are 3 steps or key areas to maintaining a balance in our bodies:  Detoxify-Nourish-Preserve

What does it mean to detoxify? Our cells need to be fed, but they also need to be cleaned.

And let’s face it, we don’t have complete control over what enters our body. [1] In the Spring edition of Alive magazine, it was pointed out that over 40,000 chemicals are registered for use in the Australian market. I suspect the United States would have similar figures, if not higher. How many of these chemicals have been tested? The report, Polluted Children, Toxic Nation put out in 2006 by the Canadian watchdog group, Environmental Defence,  tested families with children as young as ten. They found traces of 46 different toxic chemicals.
